Exposure to waterborne infectious diseases is a significant issue in rural India, where almost three-quarters of the population lack access to a reliable source of safe water and where diarrhea and similar diseases linked to the consumption of water contaminated with pathogenic microbes represents a continuous threat to the local people. This is especially so in arid areas such as western Rajasthan, where treated water is a scarce resource.
An article from Energy Resource entitled “Providing Solar, Water Filtration Technology for Clean-Water Initiative Launched by Dynoil.” GE is supplying its ecomagination-certified solar energy modules and water filtration technology for a new initiative launched by Dynoil aimed at increasing the availability of clean drinking water in rural areas of India and in other developing countries of Southeast Asia and Africa.
Currently, 23 percent of rural Hondurans and 22 percent of rural Dominicans do not have convenient access to a clean and reliable water source. As a result, many suffer from malnutrition, which blocks physical and intellectual development and makes them more susceptible to potentially fatal infectious diseases such as cholera or typhoid. In 1995 Enersol implemented two pilot renewable energy-powered community water systems. The study is entitled “Solar Water Disinfection—A Water Treatment Process Used at Household Level.” The aim of the SODIS WATER project is to demonstrate that solar disinfection of drinking water is an effective intervention against a range of waterborne diarrheal diseases at household level and as emergency relief in the aftermath of natural or man-made disasters.

They have developed and tested the Solar Water Disinfection Process (SODIS). This is a simple, low-cost technology with a great potential to improve the health of those still without access to safe drinking water.
